Traveling is a huge part of my life. I love to explore, see new destinations and immerse myself in a new city. I also really love my little, comfortable routine here in Denver. It’s a place where I have complete control over the food I’m putting in to my body and the exercise I’m going to be doing day after day. As I gear up for my trip to Mexico, I thought it would be appropriate to share some of the ways I stay healthy when traveling. From food to drinks to self-care and more, here are 7 healthy things you can do to stay on track during your next vacay!
I carry a water bottle with me everywhere when I’m in Denver so why should it be different when I’m on vacation? I can’t stress how important it is to hydrate, especially if you’re traveling to a warm destination (such as Mexico). The sun is stronger than you think and it can take a huge toll on your body if you’re not getting enough water. Be sure to keep this at the top of your list. Your body will thank you!
2. Get Enough Sleep
I know this is probably the last thing you want to hear when you’re gearing up to explore a new destination, but try your best to stick with your normal sleep cycle. It’s no fun going into a full day of sight seeing when you’re exhausted. I promise you won’t regret it and you will have the energy you need to truly enjoy yourself.
3. Walk Everywhere
Who needs to deal with Cab fares and wasting time in traffic when you have your own two feet. Walking is one of the greatest ways to see the sights of a new city. You never know when you’ll come across a hidden gem or two like a chic coffee shop or a stunning wall mural. Think about your instagram feed people! There are endless opportunities when you opt for walking.
4. Choose Your Beverages Wisely
Lets be honest here, not all vacations are going to be sober ones. It’s easy to get wrapped up into those sugary drinks but don’t let yourself do it. Stay mindful of healthier cocktails or find ways to make a “skinnier” version of the ones you love. Not only are most drinks packed with calories, they make you crash and can disrupt your sleep as well (remember #2?). If you are able to stick to non-alcoholic beverages, you go girl! Otherwise be conscious of the liquid calories you may be intaking. Moderation is Key!
5. Go To Great Lengths To Protect Your Skin
One word, sunscreen! ALWAYS protect your skin and reapply every 2 hours if possible. I usually carry a small tube in my purse when traveling so I don’t forget (Even in colder destinations!). Setting a timer is another good way to remind yourself to re-apply. No tan is worth damaging your skin long-term.
6. Eat until you’re 80% full
It’s so easy to over eat when you’re on vacation, especially when your excuse is “I’m on vacation,” but don’t fall into this trap. A good rule of thumb is to eat until you feel 80% full. I suggest starting out by simply eating half of your meal. If you can stick to your guns and say no to that 2nd serving, I can guarantee that you’ll feel so proud of yourself and have an insane amount of motivation once it’s all said and done.
7. Don’t Dismiss Exercising
Whether it’s working out in your hotel gym with an incredible view, a swim in the ocean or just a simple walk on the beach every morning, do what you can to stay active for a portion of your day, even if it’s only 20 minutes. Remember those things called endorphins? Make them a mandatory part of your day and you’re sure to set a solid and healthy foundation for the rest of your day.
I really hope these tips help on your next trip. I know it can be hard to convince yourself at first but know you are still 100% in control of you and your choices. Keep on going and enjoy yourself along the way!
